It is not a protest, does not aim to disrupt traffic and has no agenda beyond the skating. The authorities are aware of the events and our marshals keep us moving. To take part you just need to be a reasonable skater, be able to stop, turn, control your speed efficiantly and want to have fun. Part adrenalin sport, part club night, part social gathering, this most exclusive, yet inclusive event is without doubt one of Londons most unique highlights. The exhilaration of skating public roads and places, en mass with a great sound track must be experienced to be believed. The skate is marshaled by experienced street skaters and takes around two hours at an intermediate pace. Taking place every Wednesday night from April to September the skate departs from opposite the Bandstand, Serpentine Road, Hyde Park at 8pm and returns there, after a half time break by around 10pm. Routes, skate status and more can be found at londonskate.com. The Bassfreight is a huge battery powered stereo on a custom push bike that acompanies the skate. The system has been devolped over the years with the passion and kind donations of Londons skating community. Alongside the radio linked repeater sound systems or ASBOXs carried by skaters the Bassfreight is the sound of the London Skate. |
